Artist vs. Client
Morning | Afternoon | Evening
How are you all on this well, gloomy day? I'm at the office and have a great load to do, but thankfully I was trained to know how to prioritize so I'm able to do this blog.
I've been meaning to touch this topic for a while but it just got put on the bottom of the list (Like most of my blogs do nowadays!) However I somehow got back into this topic as recently I have had acquaintances who have gone through terrible things.
I have been in the wedding industry alone for 6 years and now I only get shocked when "Good" things happen. Honestly, as beautiful as this industry is, always be careful. Not a lot of people are out there to help you, especially when you're starting up. No one helped me, in fact once I got in line after 2 years all the help I asked for came then, why? Because I was "Going" places.... Anyways let's not get off the topic here Industry vs. Yourself is another blog, wait a minute let me put that on my list now!
Ok done!
So as a provider our main is to give the best service to our clients where they return, sometimes we don't give 100% (Guilty, and I've learned from it) But you need to know your rights and tell your client their rights. I know many people out there assume that "Oh I have a portfolio it's online etc" This doesn't make you a business and nor does it give you an form a fall back.
People get scared of the word "Business" Because they automatically think: Tax, insurance, accounts, copyright, trademark etc. You don't have to be a Limited Business, sign up as a sole trader. Only do this if you are serious about your business but some do freelancing which is fine but always remember the consequences if something goes wrong and by law you can be 'sued' especially if you're earning enough like a business but avoiding tax etc
As beautiful and lovely some brides are, some brides tend to 'dodge' the chargers or even worse try and 'scam' you. I have been through many not personally yet but here are some things I thought I'll mention:
- Brides/client don't want to pay enough so they lie saying they will pay after as their wedding is about to start and in a hurry and guess what they don't pay.
- Sometimes where they 'steal' your products
- They come for a trial on their actual wedding day
-They say it's a party makeup but it's actually their wedding
-Where they lie about have a reaction so they can get money out of you but truly they don't have it, they just are
-Refuse to pay the full amount of the day
and many more.
But what happens is that the artist can't do anything about it unless they have a policy and their own procedure in place. There is not point of having a policy if you have no insurance I mean, if they sue you yet you're not insured? So the money will come out of your pocket and not your insurers.
I would highly recommend you to be insured! Seriously it's disgusting what people do so it's better to be safe than sorry. It's not expensive and it's worth it.
My insurance ran out for my business branch That Personal Artist, hence why I have not been sending any of the girls to do bookings, we have been getting enquirers but I have to reject it due to this. I rather not take the risk when it comes to legal/money. (Other than that I always take risks in business)
Here are links that would help you, it's really simple but if you still don't understand due to the terminology then I'd advise for you to call them, their very helpful and really break it down for you informally. Just click on the link below:
Alternatively, if your not making much out of this freelancing but still love it just write up an agreement and state it that you don't have any insurance and that if they hire you it's at their own risk.
If you would like a policy agreement between yourself and client email me and I can give you the one I did when I started doing Make-Up (Yes I am qualified artist just not done it yet as I take my time in doing stuff because I believe in, if your gonna do it, then do it properly)
