Competition
Evening Ladies & Gentlemen,
Hope ya'll well! If your a guy and you do read my blog please let me know I'll be flattered as I only get female responding :)
So competition? We all have competition personally and professionally, let it be in the work place, or your own home or even your circle of friends we good/bad way feel intimated by our surroundings (don't deny!)
Well since I've started this business 4 years ago (Well 4 years in May!) I've come across a lot of determined people in the industry who will knock you down or try to at least, it happens we just have to get over it
In my business I have come across men specifically who I don't see as my competition but they see me as theirs. I don't know why but I do believe it's to do with either my gender, age or success but regardless, what I have done is ignored and carried/carrying on doing what I'm doing. These men always try to undermine me, take my clients, ideas etc. First I used to get furious and really demotivated (Yes Sheuly can be a little down here and there) But I asked one of my favorite photographers from Dubai: Tasneem Alsultan told me: "I would just advise to ignore. It's the best solution since life is too short to bother, and big enough to fit everyone" So since then I just find it flattering and let them do what they wish to do because I was told by somebody in my family that "Don't get too engrossed in all that because then you'll become what you hate" So true if we concentrate on our competitions will forget our priorities. My priority is to expand, explore and enjoy (3 EEE's) I love photography, wedding planning and make-up, I don't want anyone to ruin my path to that because let me tell you all I love challenges! Make-up Artistry is something I love and I know there is a lot of MUA's out there but will it stop me from doing what I love (In the future were talking) NO, why? Because I love it. Simple. Even if some photographer huff saying "another photographer becoming a MUA" It won't bother me.
For some men it has become a money making place like they will put their price down in comparison to mine just do get the booking, Allow the client if they wish to book someone else because I will not put my prices down for the sake of a booking, clients come and go, some book you, some don't! Concentrate the ones who have booked you. Another amazing educating photographer Nick Ghinois said: "During your consult DO NOT TRY AND DENIGRATE YOUR COMPETITION FOR THE SAKE OF A BOOKING!!! This type of practice will bite you in the bum."
Allah'hum'dulilah Since I've started the business I've kept myself to myself yes I've been through things but if I spoke ill off people to other then it will become a big issue but I dealt it my own way which is simply loosing all contact! Some may disagree with me but honestly it's not in my nature to get too involved in all the drama, if I wanted drama I would've gone on Star Plus!
My advice for an upcoming businesses or already set-up businesses is to keep yourself to yourself. Yes you will have someone doing the exact same thing as you maybe worse or even better but don't let that put you down because life is like that.
I know "you need to make your own mistakes to learn" but I do think in certain cases you can learn from others. I've learned a lot from people not only photographer but entrepreneurs.
Seriously if looking at your competitions facebook page, instagram or twitter & it makes you boil withdraw yourself from that for a while. Don't follow them. Be strong enough to not even look at them.
If it motivates you then carry on looking at theirs for inspiration. I always look at photographers like: JDhillion, RimaDarwash, Tasneem Alsultan, Osman Ghani for inspiration, I love each of their work in different ways!
Girls & Guys if you are starting something let it be a part-time business that is a box in your room or an office space in Knightsbridge don't worry to much about your competition just do what your doing with full love and concentration and I can assure you not only will it satisfy you but you won't regret it.
Hope this helps! Any advice or help don't hesitate to contact me via email: hello@thatepersonalphotographer.com
Lots of Love
Sheuly
P.s. There is no such thing as 'haters' in this industry rephrase them as 'competitors' as 'haters' is more personal and teenage like. Please don't think I'm ranting or anything it's a simple blog explaining and advising you upcoming amazing entrepreneurs what to be aware of and how to deal with it.
